One glance is not enough, nor likely is one visit, when the setting offers a deft balance of open spaces and partial views.
stroll gardens
Some gardens, not necessarily larger in size, are designed to encompass more plants, more experiences, more feet of walking path, and more all-around variety. These stroll gardens are made for exploring. You cannot take them in at one glance, maybe not even during one visit. And if you are so lucky or clever as to have one in your yard, you will find yourself drawn outdoors in all weather, at all hours, just to see what is happening.
From a pathside resting place to an open eating area, to a contemplative room with a distant view, to a reflecting pool or fountain, your stroll garden can give you the space for a whole range of experiences. Use eye-level barriers to mask part of the view and pique curiosity. Embrace (or invent) rough terrain, as it focuses the attention on the experience of moving through the garden. Add surprises where you can, to enhance the garden’s mystery and the garden visitor’s sense of adventurous exploration.
A cottage garden could be considered a condensed stroll garden. It favors flowers over open space and could be the best style if you have a very small yard and want a lot of color. It’s also a good choice for artists. Besides bringing cheer, it will give ample blooms for cutting, painting, or photography. Cottage gardens can be economical to install and maintain. You can use dependable, old-fashioned flowers grown from seed or bought in flats, or purchase annuals in bulk. The design can be very simple, just a path or two through the yard, which is planted densely with a mix of whatever plants you enjoy or can grow.
